Capturing the importance of an annual charity bike tour

As the fundraising partner for Alberta’s cancer centres, the Alberta Cancer Foundation (ACF) invests in innovations that will improve detection, treatment, and care across the province. They also build supportive communities of patients, survivors, and passionate Albertans — ensuring nobody in the province has to face cancer alone.

As part of these initiatives, ACF partners with Enbridge each year to host Alberta's largest cycling fundraiser, bringing thousands of Albertans together to raise essential funds for cancer treatment and research. Maven works with ACF to plan, film, and edit a wide range of videos from the tour, helping motivate new volunteers, participants, and sponsors to take part in the next year's event.

Creating the Content

1. Planning the video shoots

Maven works closely with ACF to develop a detailed shoot itinerary and video outline, which specifies how each interview and piece of footage will ultimately fit together. This stage of collaborative planning ensures we capture footage that fulfills ACF’s vision and aligns with their messaging requirements.

2. Filming the event interviews

Throughout the two-day event, Maven films interviews while an ACF representative asks questions to patients, survivors, and family members. These interviews are the emotional core of the completed videos, allowing individuals to tell their personal stories.

Maven films additional interviews at the ACF Calgary office using two cameras and a four-point lighting setup — producing high-quality footage of ACF stakeholders and doctors as they discuss the event’s fundraising impacts.

3. Capturing B-roll

Two Maven videographers capture b-roll footage throughout the tour, using a combination of drone and held-held filming. We coordinate with ACF to ensure we get everything on the established shotlist, which requires precise alignment with the event’s daily schedule.

4. Editing the videos

Maven turns all captured interviews and b-roll into an extensive documentary-style video. We collaborate with ACF to choose the footage, music, and overall structure that will most effectively communicate the far-reaching impacts of the bike tour — from small moments of connection to the massive strides in treatment funded by donors and sponsors.

Throughout the remainder of the year, Maven uses the footage to produce additional videos that tell self-contained participant stories or highlight a particular element of the fundraiser. With such an expansive library of filmed content, we can produce a diverse collection of these “breakout videos” for ACF to use across their social media channels.

The end result

Since our partnership with ACF began, Maven has created dozens of engaging assets to showcase the province-spanning impacts of their annual bike tour. The interviews, event footage, and personal stories that make up each video are just another way in which ACF brings Albertans together to invest in the future of cancer research and care.
